Activites

1 - The cultural and scientific committee in the department of Biology and Biotechnology and in the Faculty of Science organized the following lectures and meetings:
•    A lecture entitled “The interaction of trauma and genetics in Syrian refugees” was given by Dr. Rana Dajani on Oct 23, 2018.
•    A scientific meeting was organized through "SKYPE" on October 30, 2018, with the distinguished scientist Prof. Kevin Campbell from the University of Iowa. Prof. Campbell is specialized in the study of muscle diseases and considered to be the father of muscular dystrophies. The meeting reviewed his most important discoveries and discussed the challenges that he initially faced. The dialogue was moderated by Dr. Rana Dajani.
•    A lecture entitled “Reading for pleasure” was given at the university's main library by Dr. Rana Dajani on Nov 14, 2018.
•    A lecture on research and entrepreneurship was given by Dr. Rana Dajani on Nov 15, 2018 at the Faculty of Engineering, within the IEEE activities in the Hashemite University.

• A lecture entitled “Harvard or Hashemite How to make the best of what you have” was given by Dr. Rana Dajani at the Faculty of Arts on Nov 18, 2018. The meeting was moderated by Prof. Omar Al-Fajjawi.
• A dialogue session was held on Nov 27, 2018 with Dr. Magdalena Skipper, Editor-in-Chief of Nature, one of the most important scientific journals in the world. The dialogue included a brief history of the journal, how to increase the possibility of publishing in it and the different disciplines of the journal. The dialogue was moderated by Dr. Rana Dajani.

 

  • A lecture entitled " From scenes to faces: how what we look at reveals important information about ourselves" was given by Dr. Isabel Mareschal from Queen Mary University of London on Feb 2, 2019. The lecture was moderated by Dr. Rana Dajani.

  • A lecture entitled "Orphan GPCRs in Schistosoma mansoni" was given by Dr. fouad El-Shehabi on March 13, 2019.
  • A lecture entitled " The Role of Vγ2Vδ2 T Cells in Immunity Against Tuberculosis " was given by Dr. Arwa Qaqeesh on March 27, 2019.
  • Professor Khaled Abu-Elteen gave a talk through video conference to faculty members of the college of Applied Sciences in the University of Samarra, Iraq. In his talk he discussed the challenges facing researchers trying to publish in indexed journals.

2- Students of Cell Biology course attended "Lorenzo's Oil" film, which deals with a true story about a sick boy and how his parents fought to find the right treatment for him. The film included many scientific topics such as enzymes, genetics, cells, metabolism, lipids, and research and physician ethics.

3- In cooperation with the organizer of the Fifth Middle East Conference on Molecular Biology (held at the Dead Sea - 2018), the Faculty of Science and Department of Biology and Biotechnology organized a seminar entitled "Developments in Molecular Biology, Oncology and Translational Medicine" on April 10, 2018 at 11-1:00 PM.

4- students from primary and secondary schools visit the Department of Biology and Biotechnology every semester. The lab technicians take the students on a tour to show them the different buildings in the department which include the museum, animal house, herbarium, botanical garden and teaching laboratories.

 

5- Monitoring the research of high school students.

• The Department of Biology and Biotechnology supervised four students from “Umm Al-Saleh” school at Al-Hashmeyeh in Mafraq. The students applied to a scientific competition in which they studied antimicrobial and oxidative activities in certain types of plants.

6- Maintenance of the department.

Maintenance for the department is done on a regular basis by the collaborative effort between the department’s employees and students and the employees of the Department of Engineering and maintenance.

Maintenance work includes:

  • Repair of laboratory equipment.
  • Repair of the infrastructure of laboratories and classrooms.
  • Renovations of halls and corridors.
